Question 1.

I don't know anything about this sports discipline, I have never tried it. Will I be able to learn fencing and practice it as a recreational activity?
I would like to ads that I am 34 years old and I have not been very active for the last few years.

Yes. We have special fencing courses and every adult can participate in such courses, regardless of age, sex, weight, height and physical fitness.
Obviously, in case of any health issues, it is essential to discuss the willingness to practice any sport with your GP.

Question 2.
I am overweight, is it possible for me to lose a few extra pounds when practicing this sport?

Yes. You will surely lose some weight and your body mass will become stable on such a level, where you will certainly feel a considerable improvement as far as endurance and performance, as well as physical fitness are concerned.

Question 3.
Is practicing this sport safe?

Sportive fencing is not a violent sport, and exercises, as well as duels are conducted in special protective outfit. After finishing the basic fencing course, participants are well aware of fundamental safety principles related with sportive fencing (the basic rule - exercises with weapon may only be performed in full fencing outfit with the mask on the head).
This is the most safe sport from all fighting sports and in general it stands as one of the least traumatic sports (the risk of trauma reaches the level of 3% when compared with football, softball, volleyball or even riding a bike).

Question 4.
Can I sign my child for fencing classes?

Our offer is dedicated for adults. Parents can register children between the age of 6 and 10 to fencing schools established by various fencing clubs in Wrocław (registration usually starts in September). We highly recommend Kolejarz Wrocław Fencing Club ( - this is the oldest fencing club in Wrocław, successfully training children for many years now. However, our offer includes courses for parents and their children (children practice together with parents). Teenagers, who are under the age of eighteen can sign in for our courses, but they need to have a written consent from their parents.

Question 5.
Can I practice foil and sabre fencing, or can I only practice épée fencing?

We offer practicing recreational épée fencing. As far as the course is concerned, we teach our participants sabre and foil fencing only to a certain extent. Our offer is anticipated for people, who have never tried fencing before. Sportive épée fencing is a discipline, which is best for learning fencing and for practicing as a recreational activity. This results from the principles underlying épée duels, not to mention the cost of fencing equipment (the lowest cost). There is no limit concerning the target area (the whole body of the opponent is the target area - in sabre and foil the target area is limited to certain parts of the body and what is more, it is essential to wear additional, metal jackets), and in case of simultaneous hits points are awarded to both fencers (the principle obliging to use defensive actions when the opponent attacks and to award points only to one fencer). Hits are being signalled by a special apparatus, and in case of épée fencing such technical signalling is simply the easiest one. Our club enables recreational training (not on a professional level - professional level of training can be gained by kids, after long years of training, if they begin training between the age of 6 and 10) and only épée fencing.

Question 6.
How much does the equipment cost and what do I need to buy to practice fencing?

In order to practice recreational fencing all you need to have is a cheaper version of professional equipment. During the course we provide essential equipment for our participants (weapon, mask, glove, fencing outfit 350 NW) and the cost of this renting this equipment is included in the course fee. People willing to continue training should acquire the necessary equipment after finishing the course (due to hygienic reasons, as well as comfort of using properly adjusted equipment). The fundamental fencing equipment includes fencing mask, which protects the head, plastron and chest protector, which additionally protects the arm and the chest, fencing blouse, fencing trousers, fencing glove, electric épée, electric body cord, the so-called personal cord, 2 electric épées, 2 body cords, fencing shoes, fencing socks, as well as back-up épée blades. It is recommended to have a fencing bag, which holds everything and enables comfortable transportation of the equipment. The cost of such fencing set ranges between PLN 1.400 and PLN 1.900. Nonetheless, in case of beginners right after the course, a more modest set will be sufficient. The minimal set for recreational fencing should include 1 electric épée, a glove, 1 body cord, mask, plastron, chest protector and fencing blouse. It is possible to use any shoes for indoor sports, dress trousers (possibly thick ones), long socks or leggings (most people already have these things). Later, it is always possible to purchase the complete fencing equipment, which has been mentioned above. The minimal set of fencing equipment costs around PLN 1.000.

Question 7.
Being more than 30 years of age, will it be possible for me after finishing your course to participate in fencing competitions with professional fencers?

You would have to train for at least two years, having minimum 2 trainings a week, each lasting for 90 minutes. After verifying your skills (and acknowledging that your skills meet standards established by the Kolejarz WKS Club), you would have to pass physical examination for sportsmen, acquire professional attested equipment and only then you could become a member of "Kolejarz" Wrocław Fencing Club. After obtaining the license from the Polish Fencing Association you could be registered by the club to participate in competitions organised by the PCA. Nevertheless, you can enjoy the art of fencing on a recreational level, as you will be fighting with people practising recreational fencing in amateur competitions. When training in the EFC, you will have the chance to duel with fencers training professionally in Kolejarz WKS within the scope of internal tournaments.

Question 8.

Start with registering for the Basic épée fencing course (4 hour course) and Sportive épée fencing course (4 hour course). People, who currently participate in fencing courses at our club have finished both courses and practice fencing on regular basis. Both courses constitute a basic training block, and stand as the basic minimum related with fencing training. What is more, it is also possible to finish these both courses within the scope of an individual training.

Question 13.
Could you please explain the price range between PLN 120 and PLN 240 in case of individual basic épée fencing lessons and perfecting fencing lessons?

In case of these lessons, the price is a contractual price, settled individually, depending on the day, hour and the location where each training takes place. PLN 120 is a minimal price, which is possible to obtain only when other lessons or group classes are conducted during the hours preceding or following the scheduled training. The price is higher in case when training is conducted outside the Kolejarz WKS fencing room (in another facility).
